The circuit motif as a conceptual tool for multilevel neuroscience

A recent opinion article published in the Cell Press journal ‘Trends in Neuroscience’ by Oliver Braganza and Heinz Beck discusses implications of the recent boom in ‘multilevel neuroscience’. ‘Multilevel’ refers to the attempt of neuroscientists to map activity at the level of brain cells to the level of behavior.  The authors argue that this type of research requires scientists to design their hypotheses with experiments at all levels in mind. A useful approach , so they discuss, might be to design these hypotheses by thinking about an intermediate level, the level of the brain circuit . Furthermore, the authors draw attention to some important conceptual and statistical problems which are likely to arise in ‘multilevel neuroscience’. If ignored, such problems might lead to much of the published research to be irreproducible.
