We use in vivo structural and functional neuroimaging at the human systems level to unravel the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on movement disorders and dementias. Moreover, we are interested in body-brain interactions, notably neuroplastic changes and mechanisms mediating the modulation of mood and cognition by acute exercise bouts or longterm physical training. Currently, we attempt to transfer exercise interventions as a preventative or therapeutic „low cost, low risk“ approach into clinical conditions, i.e. implementing supervised exercise as randomized control trials (RCTs) in biomarker-informed neurodegenerative disease conditions. Neuroimaging output parameters (i.e. changes in regional glucose consumption, resting state connectivity, amyloid load, etc.) will inform on the largely unknown mechanisms by which exercise affects brain pathology.
