Prof. Dr. Gabor Petzold

Gabor Petzold is the Chair of the Department of Vascular Neurology at Bonn University Hospital and the University of Bonn. He also is the Director of Clinical Research and a senior research group leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn. In addition, he currently is the speaker of the DFG-funded clinician-scientist program Neuro-aCSis and executice board member of the BMBF-funded advanced clinician-scientist program ACCENT.

The research interests of his group are to explore pathophysiological mechanisms as well as novel treatment options for acute and chronic neurovascular diseases, such as stroke, brain hemorrhage, cerebral small-vessel disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. This research involves preclinical models, clinical cohorts as well as clinical interventional trials. In addition, his group investigates neuroinflammatory mechanisms in astrocytes and microglia as well as vascular changes in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, and how they shape the initiation and progression of these diseases.
