We are delighted to introduce Professor Tobias Ackels, who has graciously accepted our job offer and will be joining the Institute of Experimental Epileptology and Cognition Research (IEECR) as a Principal Investigator starting in August 2023. The current senior postdoctoral researcher at the Francis Crick Institute, London, has recently been awarded the esteemed ERC (European Research Council) Starting Grant for his project, Temporally Complex Odor Information Encoding (“TempCOdE”).
Tobias Ackels brings with him a wealth of expertise in understanding how the brain processes sensory information and its influence on our perception of the world. He integrates cellular and systems neuroscience by utilizing in vivo opto- and electrophysiology, as well as behavioral profiling of freely moving animals. His research aims to investigate how mammals utilize olfaction to extract spatial information from temporal patterns.
To prepare for his new role as a Principal Investigator at the University of Bonn, he has actively participated in professional development programs. He completed the EMBO Laboratory Leadership Programme in 2022 and the “Postdoc to PI” program at the Francis Crick Institute in London in 2021. These experiences have equipped him with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in his new position.
Furthermore, his expertise and contributions have been recognized by the scientific community. He has been invited as a speaker at an upcoming meeting in Nijmegen, Netherlands, where he will be part of a symposium focused on “Novel Perspectives of Mouse Olfaction.”
We extend our warmest congratulations to Professor Tobias Ackels on his achievements and eagerly welcome him to the Bonn Neuroscience community. We look forward to the exciting discoveries and advancements that his research will bring, further deepening our understanding of the brain and sensory processing.
